After Big Bend

We left Big Bend National Park on Saturday, April 12th heading west, mostly along the Rio Grande. The views were stunning as we drove through Big Bend Ranch State Park, although you can’t capture the depth and spectacular color on camera.

Our destination for the day was Presidio, TX, close to the border with an RV park and a Catholic Church. The reviews we read online about the RV park were glowing. Apparently some people have been wintering there for 20 years. We couldn’t figure out why you’d want to keep coming back there. Of course it was close to 100° when we got there, and no shade. It’s always suspect when you call to make a reservation at a park and they practically laugh at you. “No, haha, y’all don’t need reservations.” (I took this picture off the internet).

The church, however, was much more appealing. Mass was in English, but we were definitely in the minority. Knowing Spanish would’ve been helpful at a restaurant and bakery we stopped at, but the only Spanish I could recall was zapatos and I couldn’t fit that into a conversation.

Davis Mountain State Park was our next destination for Sunday and Monday nights. The route to Fort Davis, TX involved a quick stroll through the town of Marfa. (Looks like a typo. All I could think was Marfa, Marfa, Marfa.) Apparently the movie Giant with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean was filmed in Marfa. The town had interesting architecture and some art galleries. A nice stop.

We are now camped out at Davis Mountain State Park until tomorrow and we’ll make our way to Carlsbad Caverns next.

Awesome. This sounds like a great trip.

Good thing you didn’t say zapatos at the bakery, you would have put your foot in your mouth. 🙂

    1. Haha, yeah. Besides bakery item they also sold tamales and turkey tails??!?!? Turkey tails were bright red. We went for tamales instead.

  2. Your wondering is awesome. The caverns should be great. Looking forward to more pictures.
